Nothing New under the Sun
First thing’s first. This is not a novel idea or revolutionary concept that will make this post famous. The lesson I want to teach here has been told and taught for years, decades, centuries, etc.
If you want to get good at something, you have to practice
Examples are Helpful
However, despite the constant parroting of this lesson through history, I have found it somewhat difficult to find actual examples. Mostly, it seems like something everyone knows how to say, and that’s “good enough”
I am no where near being at the “height” of skill in my hobby of miniature painting, but even I have to admit the difference between these two pieces
Both are models by the amazing Yasashii Kyojin Studio, who you can find on Instagram as @yasashiikyojinstudio
and both were printed and painted by yours truly
However, these models were painted two years apart. I trust ya’ll’s intelligence enough to piece out which one is two years old and which was painted less than a month ago
I have not been painting non-stop between these projects. I have other hobbies, jobs, and hobbies I’m trying to turn into jobs that take up my time. But, like I’ve mentioned before, the old “practice makes perfect” saying is clearly true
A weekend, an hour, or just a handful of minutes learning how to hold and properly use a brush, will do wonders eventually!
Takeaway
I am not a fan of self-congratulations for self-congratulation’s own sake
What I’m suggesting is a practical means towards self-improvement. Take a look back, and compare old projects to new ones. Compare the old you to the new you. Odds are that you’ve gotten better at something. Maybe its detail, or scale, or theme composition
Whatever it is, admit to yourself that you’ve improved, and take that improvement to heart
Cheers!
